About Me
My name is Maya, and I recently graduated with a Master of Science degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. Before that, I graduated from Carleton University in Ottawa with a Bachelor's in Honors Journalism.
My journalistic interests lie in long-form storytelling and feature writing. I’ve written extensively on healthcare, gender and sexuality issues, and reproductive medicine for various local publications. Most recently, I covered New York’s Adult Survivors Act and an in-development male contraceptive pill.
I’m also an experienced editor, having worked as an associate editor for Her Campus Carleton, an online publication dedicated to lifestyle and wellness. Additionally, I was a content editor and writer at Upkeep Media, where I published articles and listicles for property management firms using CMS and applying SEO strategies.
Just before starting my year at Columbia, I wrapped up working as a media analyst for the Privy Council Office of Canada, where I produced media analyses on a variety of issues relevant to the federal government by monitoring the news through print, broadcast, and social media.
Adept at all things digital production, I’m well-versed in Adobe Suite software, video and audio production, website builders, and social media management programs. In my downtime, I love singing karaoke, reading a good thriller, and writing short stories.
Please feel free to connect and reach out to me! I cover health, science, relationships, sexuality, gender, and injustice. If you have any opportunities for me, whether it be a journalistic or communications role, I'm eager about the prospect of contributing my skills and perspective to your team.
